BREAKING THE CHAINS OF ADDICTION

Below is my personal story with drugs, if you are struggling, I want you to know that you are not alone, If i overcame them, you too today you can find sttrength to do it.

In the beginning, my struggle with addiction came wrapped in a lie :  “I can manage this.”

It started casually in my S.3 with marijuana and alcohol, mostly driven by curiosity and observing the dynamics around me ( family and friends). I convinced myself that I wasn’t drinking like my father or getting out of hand , that I was in control. But control was just an illusion. By S.5, my curiosity escalated leading me to use heroin and crack cocaine.

Within four weeks, what started as a quiet experiment in the school restrooms turned into a full-blown dependency. Soon, I was walking miles during Covid, walking miles from Seeta to Kyaliwajala just to feed my habit that was quietly stripping away my youth, my studies and my character.

For a long time, my journey through recovery felt like a spinning wheel. I went through multiple rehab stays- from Butabika to private facilities up to Gulu, and even tried treatments like medical implants like Naltrexone.

Yet I kept on falling into the same psychological trap: Substitution

When I stopped using heavy substances, I would fall back on marijuana, rationalising that “weed was normal” or “it helped my daily output. But treating one substance as a safe haven only kept the underlying addiction loop alive. Every time I told myself I could handle a lighter substance it eventually built a bridge right back to heroin and crack cocaine.

Addiction isn’t just about the drug itself, its about the mindset behind it. I realised my mind was trapped in a reward loop – believing that to relax, cope or function, I had to be high.

When you are deep in addiction, its easy to blind yourself to the damage around you. But addiction never affects just one person. As an only child, I slowly saw the emotional damage and financial strain my choices put on my family, especially my mother.

During addiction, you risk losing everything- trust, peace, finances and even relationships. Realising the pain I was causing was a heavy awakening, but for insight alone wasn’t enough to break the cycle until I addressed the spiritual and psychological roots of my behaviour.

My true shift began when I stopped fighting the process with my own ego and surrendered my struggle to the Almighty. Through my journey, my faith became my anchor. God allowed me to clearly see the loop I was stuck in, not just in my actions but also through my patterns.

This year I made a personal firm decision, I collected every piece of drug paraphernalia(marijuana joints and vapes) I owned and threw it away. I stopped rationalising “safe” substances and chose total sobriety

To any one reading this who feels trapped in addiction of any sorts or a cycle they can’t break. You are not alone, and you are not beyond reaching. If you are constantly substituting one habit for another or telling yourself you have things under control while your life slips away, know that real freedom starts with complete honesty.

Acknowledge where you are, seek real support and ground yourself in a power greater than yourself. Healing isn’t about managing your addiction, its more of stepping out of the loop and rebuilding your life from the foundation up.
